Thupten Chöling (Thub bstan chos gling) is a retreat community and monastery established in the 1960s by Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche in northeastern Nepal’s Solu-Khumbu area. Trulshik Rinpoche oversees the lives of almost 900 monks and nuns, the majority of whom are Tibetan refugees.

The late Sangey Lama founded the Chiwong Monastery in 1923. Sangey Lama’s forefathers, like all Sherpas, originated in Kham, northern Tibet. They went to the Everest area of the Solu Khumbu and settled there some 500 years ago.

The Chiwong Monastery formerly resonated with the prayers and scholarly activity of its numerous monks and nuns. The monastery has a rich history, having hosted various spiritual leaders and scholarly monks. Chiwong Monastery had the honor of hosting Dza-Rong-Phuk Sangey Ngawang Tenzing Jangpo from 1955 to 1958. In addition, His Holiness Trulshig Rinpoche resided in the monastery from 1960 until 1967.

Our Pikey trek Itinerary:

The trek to Pikey Peak normally takes 8 days, depending on your schedule and hiking speed. We are organizing a trek from Dhap Bazar:

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu:

Arrive in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Rest and prepare for the trek. You can explore the vibrant streets of Thamel, a popular tourist area in Kathmandu, and make any necessary arrangements for the trek.

  • Day 2: Kathmandu to Dhap (3,000 meters / 9,914 feet):

Take an early morning Drive from Kathmandu to Dhap. The HI way passes through beautiful forests and terraced fields, offering glimpses of the Himalayan landscapes. Overnight stay in Dhap.

  • Day 3: Dhap to Jhapre (2,940 meters / 9,646 feet)

After the breakfast continue your trek from Dhap to Jhapre. The trail gradually ascends, and along the way, you’ll pass through several small villages and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Overnight stay in Jhapre.

  • Day 4: Jhapre to Pikey Base Camp (3,640 meters / 11,942 feet)

Today’s trek takes you from Jhapre to Pikey Base Camp. As you gain altitude, the views become more spectacular, with the Himalayan peaks coming into sight. Reach Pikey Base Camp, in the evening you will have wonderful sunset views, where you’ll stay for the night.

  • Day 5: Pikey Base Camp to Pikey Peak Summit (4,065 meters / 13,337 feet) and to Junbesi (2,675 meters / 8,776 feet):

Early in the morning, start your ascent to the summit of Pickey Peak. The hike is relatively steep but rewarding. Reach the summit in time to witness the mesmerizing sunrise over the Himalayas. After taking in the breathtaking views, descend to Junbesi for an overnight stay.

  • Day 6: Junbesi to Phaplu (2,413 meters / 7,918 feet)

From Junbesi, trek downhill to Phaplu. The trail passes through charming villages, terraced fields, and lush forests. Phaplu is a district headquarter of the solukhumbu, Phaplu/Salleri is a small town with basic facilities and is known as the gateway to the Everest region. Overnight stay in Phaplu.

  • Day 7: Phaplu to Kathmandu

From Phaplu drive back to Kathmandu by depending with cost, privet jeep or local jeep about 9-11 hours. In the evening, you can savor a traditional Nepali dinner or celebrate the successful completion of your trek.

Depart from Kathmandu and continue with your onward journey or return to your home country, carrying wonderful memories of your Pickey Peak Trek.

Pikey Trek Package Information: 

Arrivals: Namaste and Heartily welcome to Nepal, From the International airport, Ascend Hikes representative will pick you up and transfer to Hotel in Kathamdnu and will give you an information about trek and some important things what you have need during the trek with us, like next morning where are meeting points and about the guide and porters with details information so, easy for the next day trek.

Accommodations: On the trek, we’ll stay in tea houses 5 nights and BB plan hotel in Kathmandu 2 nights. Every accommodation is shared by two people. A single supplement costs an extra and is served upon request. Ascend Hikes can arrange for accommodations with private bathrooms; but in this locations, tea houses only have common restrooms and washing machines. It should be noted that while single rooms may be hard to come by at higher elevations, they are easily accessible in Kathmandu, and the hiking regions.

Meals (Food): You will have 7 Breakfast, 6 Lunch and 6 Dinner all together and we can eat both traditional Nepalese cuisine and more widely available international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) while on our trek. We will eat breakfast and dinner at the teahouse or from a menu at the lodge where we stay the night, and we will eat lunch while traveling to our next location. While you stay in Kathmandu just breakfast is served.

Luggage weight: Please be sure we Ascend Hikes Pvt ltd. Are fixed for the weight limit for our Porter in the mountains. Maximum weight of luggage is 9.5kg each person is included on this package.

Facilities for the Trek:

Water: The tea houses and shops along the way sell bottled water. However, for environmental concerns, we suggest that you carry a water bottle and fill it with boiled or filtered water purchased at tea shops or lodging facilities. We also advise you to employ water purifying techniques. If you ask us, we can provide you purifying tablets.

Communications: In Kathmandu, you may purchase a local SIM card. At higher elevations, it could not be powerful enough, though, depending on the network carrier. At least once per day, our central office calls each trekking team through the trip leader. Additionally, we are always there to help in case of an emergency.

Currency Exchange: 1 USD is equal to 135 NPR (Nepalese Rupees). In Kathmandu right now, please exchange your major currencies, for a quick and simple experience, we suggest utilizing authorized currency exchangers in Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, NPR can be taken out of ATMs, however there may be costs associated with doing so. Please keep in mind that only INR 100 notes are accepted in Nepal if you are carrying Indian Rupees.

Because the weather in spring is often temperate and pleasant, with moderate temperatures throughout the day and colder temperatures at higher elevations. Autumn Season (September-November): In autumn provides a fantastic opportunity to see Nepal’s cultural and visual magnificence throughout the fall season. The temperate temperatures and bright sky make it an excellent season for walking, with unimpeded vistas of mountain ranges and landscapes. However, it is crucial to note that this period coincides with the monsoon season, which brings hot, humid weather and significant rainfall2. Here are some important details regarding summer weather on the Pikey Peak Trek: Expect periodic rains, which may make the paths muddy and hazardous.  Daytime temperatures may be extremely high, reaching up to 30°C (86°F), but evenings can be colder. Heavy cloud cover and rain might reduce vision, making it difficult to see the mountains clearly. Wet and muddy weather can make the paths difficult to navigate.
However, Because of the weather, it also provides a unique type of beauty, with lush, green scenery and less tourists. If you don’t mind getting a little wet and like the beautiful foliage, it may be a satisfying experience.

Winter (December – February): Pikey Peak Trek’s winter weather provides a unique experience, with hard terrain and snow-covered routes. Renting a jeep or motorbike is a cheap choice, although it takes longer. The route provides amazing views of the surroundings, including traditional villages, temples, and Himalayan Mountains.

    From Junbesi, trek downhill to Phaplu. The trail passes through charming villages, terraced fields, and lush forests. Phaplu is a small town with basic facilities and is known as the gateway to the Everest region. Overnight stay in Phaplu.

  • Day 7: Phaplu to Kathmandu

    Take a morning flight or drive back to Kathmandu from Phaplu. Rest and relax in Kathmandu, or you can explore the city’s cultural landmarks and enjoy some souvenir shopping. In the evening, you can savor a traditional Nepali dinner or celebrate the successful completion of your trek.

  • Day 8: Departure from Kathmandu

    Depart from Kathmandu and continue with your onward journey or return to your home country, carrying wonderful memories of your Pickey Peak Trek.
